Is this care?

No. Amble is companionship and social support - company, conversation, hobbies and outings. Not personal or medical care.

What does it cost?

Nothing until you have chosen a companion. Then a one-off £159 introduction fee and £39 a month membership. Each visit is at your companion's own rate - the guide is £45 for two hours, including their travel. Founding Families who join in 2026 pay a £99 introduction fee and £20 a month, for as long as they stay members. Full details are on our Pricing page.

Can we use Attendance Allowance to pay for Amble?

Many families can. Attendance Allowance is paid to the older person, is not means-tested, and has no rules on what it is spent on. We do not fill in the form, but Citizens Advice will go through it with you free of charge. Our Help with the cost page sets out who can claim and how.

Question 4

Is it safe? How are companions checked?

Accepted Answer

Every companion is interviewed on a live, scored video call and gives two references. They complete our induction, including safeguarding, and DBS and right-to-work checks must clear before a first visit.

Can an older person sign up themselves?

Absolutely. Families often arrange it, but you’re very welcome to choose companionship for yourself.

Can a companion visit someone in a care home?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A companion can visit someone living in a care home or retirement housing, just as a friend or family member would - for company, a chat or an activity. Visits are arranged around the home's normal visiting times. Amble provides companionship, not personal or nursing care, which stays with the home.

Which areas do you cover?

Amble is a national service. Tell us where your mum or dad lives - or where you live, if this is for you - and we will be in touch to find out more about them and start finding a kindred spirit.

Question 8

How are companions matched?

We start with a free consultation of about 20 minutes, by video or phone, to understand their interests, routine and what good company looks like for them. We then hand-pick a shortlist of companions nearby - on shared interests, personality, availability and distance - and talk it through with you. You choose who visits.

Question 9

Does Amble only help older people?

Accepted Answer

Our focus right now is older adults and their families, because that's where the need for regular, reliable companionship is greatest.
