When you pay, and for what.
You enquire. Nothing to pay.
We talk properly. A personal consultation with you and the person you are arranging this for. Still nothing to pay.
We bring you a shortlist. People we have met, chosen for this person. We discuss the profiles together and agree who might be suitable.
You choose someone. Only now do you sign the terms and pay. Your membership starts.
Each visit. Your companion’s rate is taken the day before. Your companion is paid in full when they check out.
Cancelling. If twenty-four hours’ notice is given a visit costs nothing. Less than that and it is charged in full, because your companion has held the time. If your companion cancels, at any notice, you are not charged.
You may already have funding that covers this.
Some of the money an older person already receives can be spent on companionship, and most families do not know it. It is worth a conversation before you assume Amble is out of reach.
Attendance Allowance. Paid to the older person, not means-tested, and no restriction on what it is spent on.
Council direct payments. Where a local authority has agreed a personal budget, families can often choose how part of it is used.
NHS personal health budgets. The same principle, arranged through the NHS.
Social prescribing. A link worker or care co-ordinator at a GP surgery may be able to point a family this way.
